Many people believe that to lose weight that they need to make drastic changes to their lifestyle. The rise of fad diets and the mass publicity that they have been given most likely has promoted this philosophy. Radical changes to the way you live generally are not realistic to maintain long term. To lose weight and keep it off you need to develop some simple habits and educate yourself in areas that will help you live a healthier lifestyle so you can get the most out of life.

1. Keep a food journal
Studies have shown that successful weight loss begins with first identifying where you are consuming most of your calories. Keeping a food journal will be a huge self education tool, as you will immediately see where you can cut out unnecessary calories from your diet. 2. Are you in a healthy weight range?
Take a diet profile and BMI test to see if your are in a healthy weight range. I believe that your weight should be healthy, and one should not aspire to being a stick figure like the media portrays is attractive. Remember that the people in the in the magazines are airbrushed and photo shopped and that it is unrealistic to look that way! A diet profile will work out how many calories that you need to consume and the calorie differential that you need to lose weight and achieve your weight goal on the time frame you specify. Many online diet companies use a diet profile to set your program.

A BMI calculator will serve you well. A BMI calculator will give you your healthy weight based on your height and weight and will give you a numerical figure for this. Healthy BMI ranges are summarized below:

< 19 Underweight - should consider putting on some weight
20 - 25 Healthy weight range
25 - 30 Overweight - should lose some weight to avoid health risks >
30 Obese - should see doctor to help lose weight and avoid likely health risks

Remember BMI is only a guide, however it is a good place to start!

3. Use a calorie counter
Lose weight by using a calorie counter. Using a calorie counter is a fantastic educational tool and also ensures that the food you are eating works in with your daily calorie allowance. You can use a calorie counter in a book form or via the internet. The internet is much more interactive, however a book can be convenient when you are out and about during the day. 5. Get plenty of sleep
Sleep is essential for your body and brain to function properly. Many people are not getting sufficient sleep. People tend to be more susceptible to binge eating and emotionally eating when they are tired. If you are consuming less calories from your diet and burning more calories through your exercise, chances are that you may feel tired as your body is adjusting to your new lifestyle. One thing is for sure though; once your body adapts you will be feeling full of life!!
